Fractions are formed by adding -tel to the stem of the ordinal, except in the case of (ein)halb. As nouns they are neuter: das Viertel, das Achtel. They are frequently compounded with a following noun: eine Viertelstunde, a quarter of an hour; ein Viertelpfund Käse, a quarter of a pound of cheese; ein Vierteljahr, a quarter of a year.
1/2 is used as an adjective: ein halbes Brot, half of a loaf of bread. If it is preceeded by the article one reads "halb"; die halbe Stunde, the half-hour.
