1. Stunde - Lesson 1

Familie Schmidt

Dear visitor, it takes a long time (>20 hours) to type the vocabulary (see below) from the army language book and install the links. I will do this for future lessons only if the public is using this. If you want me to continue this for future lessons send me an e-mail saying so.

A Translation of Familie Schmidt

Please send me your corrrections to this translation

Fritz Schmidt has two brothers and one sister. He is 12 years old. The father is a bookseller. Wilhelm, the big brother, is a soldier; little Robert doesn't yet go to school. Sister Marie became engaged at Easter. She is the oldest child of the family. Her fiance is a captain in Hamburg. The Mother is glad that all the childern are still at home. Only Wilhem lives in the barracks. They live in a suburb of Berlin. However, he visits the parents, brothers, and sister often. Fritz is filled with enthusiasm by his stories. He also wants to become a pilot. I am not happy with this translation; I hope you can send improvements.

A note about translations:

You must first try to understand the German text and then write a translation that accurately relates the facts and retains the mood and perspective of the German author. This is not easy because German uses different contexts and these can mislead the beginning student. For example, German often uses the present to express the past or future (see lesson 9 verbs).
