I am seeking the aid of former teachers and students to make this report historically accurate. Some details are likely to change.

Claude Eddleman Farm (1939-1958)

Fond recollections of growing up on a family farm. Written by Harold Eddleman.

Hogs

We grew hogs largely for our own meat supply. We killed two to four per year for food and seldom sold more than 10 and may of those were sold as feeder pigs. We used most of our grain for poultry and dairy cows. We seldom had more than 2 sows.

Why didn't we grow more hogs? Fencing pastures to handle hogs would have been a large expense and our small farm did not have enough grain to grow many pigs. Our largest hog lot was only an acre in size and that could grow pasture for only about one pig.

Probably the main reason was that no one in the family loved hogs. We loved to pet and groom our dairy cows for 4-H club fair, but gave our hogs marginal care.
