Harold,
There is apparently a diary transcription for Rev. Johann Gottfried Arndt (John Godfrey Arends) that has just been released. This man covered a portion of western NC as a Lutheran/Reformed minister in the late 1700s. I am told it has a little bit of new information on the Rowan Co. family. Will post what it has when I receive a copy.

Compiled by Harold Eddleman, Descendent of Catherine Eddleman
The purpose of this page is to investigate the
history of the David Eddleman group from Steinseltz which first came to
my attention in the mid-seventies as I looked over shiplists for the first
time. For
the
next 20 years I did not give much attention to this shiplist because I
concentrated on trying to push backward from Catherine Eddleman who is
my earliest firmly documented ancestor. Steinseltz lies 20 miles west of
Karlsruhe, Germany. Visit
Steinseltz in France. Photos

(ship) Ship List - Pennsylvania German Pioneers
Vol 1.
Ship: Brigantine Richard and Elizabeth; Rotterdam ==> Plymouth ==>
Philadephia
Captain: Christopher Clymer. Arrival: 1733 Sep 28
Edelmann on board:
David Edelmann Age 49, This could be the father of Philip J. Edelman
Philip Jacob Edelmann age 25, Margaretha Edelmann, age 26; are these husband
and wife?
Anna Maria Edelman age 54, could be wife or sister of David, or other relative,
or perhaps the widow of an Edelmann,
Baltasar Edlemann age 4 - sick, - might be son of Philip??
If Anna Maria were wife of David, then the lineage might be:
David and Anna Maria Edelman ==> Philip Jacob Edelmann (wife Margaretha)
==> David of North Carolina (b. 1736?)
I grouped the facts thusly to evaluate whether one person could have fit the dates and to see if the dates fit for childern and grandchildern. It appears one person might fit all the dates and places.
Age -- Date ---------------- Event.......(age means age of the David Eddleman; born Lancaster)
00......1684 calc ------------David Edelmann born,
perhaps in Alsace or Switzerland
24......1708 calc ----------- Philip Jacob Edelmann born in Europe; age

Alsace?
54 --- 1737 May 15 -- above David baptised at Reformed Church, Lancaster
PA. (1) (see ship)
----The info below is for David Eddleman of NC ; David Eddleman of Europe would be 74--
Age ... Date .... Both pertain to David Eddleman of North Carolina
21 --- 1757 Apr 27 -- NC -- Anna Catherina Sauer
born, first child of Philip Sauer. Godparents: John Michael Young and wife
Anna Eva Young. See my short biography of Philip Sauer below. Perhaps his
child was named after Anna Catherina (?Conrad or Sauer?) Eddleman but is
not living in the community or is still single and unable to care for a
possible orphan. (2). However most German were named Anna and Catherine
was a common name, therefore the names do not provide strong relationship
to anyone.
23 --- 1760 October 7 - Daniel Edlemann and Maria Bornin were sponsors
at the birth of Daniel Laurier. Perhaps this Daniel was a brother, or relative
of David Eddleman. (3)
25 --- 1761 Mar 24 -- George Henry Eddleman (Gorg Heinrich Edelman) born
York County PA. Parents David Eddleman (Edelman) and wife Katherine baptised

37 --- 1773-74 John Eddleman #437 (Indian Creek Miller) born in NC to Catherine
Eddleman #440. I have estimated his birthdate from Census and Poll Tax
dates.
40 --- 1775 error Daniel Eddleman Born in Kentucky. In the 1850 Census
Daniel said he was 75 and born in Kentucky. Sharon Renner suggests Daniel
was not sure of his birth date.
42 --- 1776 Jul 31 - An Edelmann took family from Abbot Creek NC to Holston
River. Salem Diary: entry for date of 1776 Jul 31. (Records of Monravians

42 --- 1778 Catherine Eddleman claimed to have settled on land in KY
43 --- 1779-80 David Ederman in Capt Isaac Ruddles Co near Cynthia KY(x).
I have not seen this list. Louise Eddleman, KY, mentioned this list during
the 1970s.
+ ---- 1783 Catherine Eddleman is granted 3__ acres for settling on it
in 1778. If David was the husband of this Catherine Eddleman, perhaps he
had died or been killed in an indian raid. I have never found any record
of any David Eddleman in KY at this time, but Louise Eddleman of Springfield,
KY, says there was a David Ederman on a militia record (see 5 lines above).
Discussion of the above data:
A) If sponsors were usually relatives--perhaps Mrs. Phillip Sauer, Adam
Conrad, and Anna Catharina Eddleman are siblings. Likewise Henry Conrad
might be a sibling of these three. Looking for more data on Adam Conrad,
Henry Conrad, Mrs. Phillip Sauer, and Anna Catharina _____ (?Conrad?) might
help identify David Eddleman.
B) Can someone check sources in Lancaster, PA for Jacob Eddleman, David Edelmann, Henry Conrad, Adam Conrad, Phillip Sauer, Anna Catharina (?Conrad)

Probably tarried 5 or 6 years in Philadelphia. In Rowan County, NC, 1754-56. He married Christianna Foust, daughter of a neighboring German about 1755-56. His first born and first record in the Pilgrim Reformed Church was Anna Catherine Sauer, born 1757 Apr 27. Godparents (taufzaugen) were John Michael Young and his wife Anna Eva Young. Philip owned land adjacent and north of the Church lands, deed dated 1763. Part is now covered by the Lexington City Lake.
I notice the ship Albany arriving 1749 sep 2 had some people from Erbach which might be Odenwald and it had 3 Edelmann.

The above people are not of my immediate family, my interest is in all the Edelman families that migrated to this country. It would be still seem most advisable to study the records from 1680 to 1750. It may be also a possibility that these people orginonaly migrated to your region from the Odenwald.
Sincerely,

This suggests Mrs Matthew Bauser's maiden name was Anna Elizabeth Eddleman and that she may be a sister of Philip Jacob Edelmann and a dau of David Edelmann of Steinselz.

Hello Folks:
I looked over the church records of LDS Film # 0772787 (twice) and could not recognize any reference to either B(a)user or Eddlemann.
I had hoped it might give us some information such as marriage or baptismal records for either or both families; since Anna Eliz- abeth Eddlemann's family (wife of Mathias Bausser II) came from those villages. Both families came to America on the "Richard and Elizabeth" in 1733.
While I have no knowledge of the German language, I think I would have been able to spot either surname.
However, I wish some others would check it out also in case I miss- ed something.
It's a _very small roll of film, maybe 1/8 of a full roll, perhaps 3-400 frames, though it contains the church records for about half a dozen villages in the area from 1700 to about 1800; both Catholic and Protestant. Cleeburg is one of the other villages I think plus a couple more.
The cost to rent the film was $3.25; very inexpensive.

You had better copy the maps to your web site rather than link to my maps because I will be removing the maps of Steinseltz & Rott. When a distant Cline cousin (I think it was Tracey) posted the info from Annette K. Burgert's "Eighteenth Century Emigrants from the Northern Alsace" on our Clines/Kleins I did a search with MapQuest & decided that Burgert's page 293 "Steinsel", page 298 "Steinsel [Nieder or Ober Stinzel", & page 300 "Steinsal [Niederstinzel]" referred to Steinseltz which is near Wissembourg. I now see I am wrong & it should be Niederstinzel or Oberstinzel which are near Postroff. That is why I am removing the maps that show Rott & Steinseltz. I have a Coleman reunion this weekend so it may be a week or 2 before I remove the maps.
> When I was in the army I was stationed 30 miles from Rott, but at >that time was looking for my ancestors up near Denmark. > Do you know much about Rott/Steinstelz?
I only know what is in Burgert's book. if you don't have it you should get her book on interlibrary loan or buy it. I see your Hans David Edelmann on page 138. Rott is shown on the map on page 9 along with more info on the surrounding pages. I have a copy of Burgert's book on interlibrary loan. >-- >Harold Eddleman,

Below is an e-mail and the attached file which
Dr. William Rodney Eddleman compiled in April 1998 from the research papers
of his Uncle Riley Eddleman, Ph. D. (deceased). Riley Eddleman was a college
professer in St. Louis who made a great effort to collect primary genealogical
data for the use of future Eddleman genealogists. Descendants of Hanss
David Edelmann are much indebted to Riley Eddleman for his investments
of time and finance to make available primary references and English translations
of them. When these letters were written, Riley Eddleman believed Hanss
David Edelmann of Rott was his ancestor, but later work by Bill Eddleman
disproved that and Bill is still searching for the European roots of their
NC Lincoln County 17xx ancestors.

RESEARCH OF THE REV. DENNIS KASTENS CONDUCTED FOR RILEY R. EDDLEMAN
Letter of 12 January 1980
Dear Mr. Eddleman,
Should you decide to accompany, we will visit Steinseltz on Friday, July 25, in the afternoon. As soon as the Steinseltz microfilm (which you ordered last Wednesday) arrives, hopefully we can trace your Eddleman forebearers back more definitely. It will probably be that we will find you to have ancestors in Rott, Cleeburg, Weissenburg, etc., so that many of your ancestral moorings will be in exactly the villages we visit. Since the Eddlemans were there before "30 Yrs. War" I believe this will be the case.
Sincerely,
Dennis Kastens
P.S. We have space for your spouse also on the tour.

The Reformation intro. 1530 to Steinseltz. It remained Lutheran until 1588 when it became Reformed in faith. Again in 1702 it became Lutheran and the community was religiously served from the Rott Church. However, in 1911 [??] the Steinseltz congregation became self sufficient. Since 1685 3 groups: Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed have simultaneously used the Steinseltz church bldg. by staggering worship schedules. The Steinseltz Church tower dates from the Romanesque Period, being built in the 1100s. The Chancel is Gothic. In 1865 the village of 560 inhabitants had 86 Catholic, 34 Lutheran, and 440 Reformed adherents.
Dear Riley,
Hold everything! I found your Immigrant forebearer in Steinseltz! Philipp Jacob Edelmann, son of David Edelmann,a citizen of Rott/Alsace, and Maria Margaretha Wenner, daughter of Simon Wenner, citizen of Oberhoffen/Alsace were married in the Steinseltz Church on January 15, 1732. I will get everything to you when I have time to fit a pedigree together. Meanwhile, I would assume that your source in Penna. had the Jacob and David switched as to father and son! My off-hand assumption would be like this: David Edelmann, born circa 1670 Jacob Edelmann, born circa 1700 Wife: Margaretha was Confirmed 1716 (born c. 1701) Balthasar Edelmann, born circa 1732 late.
"Den 15ten Januar 1732 seynd nach zu vorgeschehenden drey--mahliger Proclamation zu Steinseltz oeffentlich eingesegnet worden: Philipp Jacob Edelmann, David Edelmann, Burger zu Rott, ehelicher Sohn; und Maria Margaretha, Simon Wenners zu Oberhoffen, Burger, eheliche Tochter."
I'm sure you can translate that. I'll get back to you in a couple of days, time permitting.
Sincerely,
Dennis A. Kastens

1. Balthasar *c. late 1732 - (he was not baptized in Steinselz)
The Edelmann surname is of Pfalz and Alsacian (not Swiss) standing, having been there already prior to the 30 Years War in Zweibrucken, Weissenburg, and Strassburg. The Wenners (such is the orthography 1685-1785 in the Steinseltz records) appear to be Alsacian, likewise having preceding the 30 Years War.
Dear Riley,
Enclosed are a few sheets of data that I promised regarding your Edelmann forebearers from Steinselz/Alsace. I know the materials appear a bit scant, but I tried my best, making about six trips to St. Louis, 3 to the Ladue microfilm library and 3 to the Concordia Seminary library in Clayton to obtain data on your ancestor, the Rev. Wolfgang Beyerfalck, the first known Protestant clergyman to serve Steinselz Church. I don't know if you descend from other clergymen, but thinking maybe you didn't, I wanted to research this one as extensively as I could so you would have the information for your files. At the bottom of this letter are the sources I read to obtain the necessary data. We may need to get together to show the process I engaged in to obtain this information, since it was more complicated than usual.
The Rev. Wolfgang Bairfalckh (later spelling Beyerfalck, Latin spelling Beryfalkus was born about 1540 in Steinselz/Alsace to Gangolf Bairfalckh. His father sent him to study at the Gymnasium and University of Basel, Switzerland for 6 1/2 years (1558-1565) since he was a gifted student. Most probably he received his elementary education in the Latin School at Weissenburg (3 kilometers from Steinselz) for when he matriculated at Basel he was listed as "Weissenburgensis" as a nickname. After graduated from Basel, he taught the II Klasse there for 2 1/2 years (1565-1568). The European Gymnasium System, comparable to our High School and Junior College, was like this:
VI Klasse Freshman
V Klasse Sophomore
IV Klasse Junior
III Klasse Senior
II Klasse College Freshman
I Klasse College Sophomore
Upon completion from the above course, one could study privately and make
preparations to be examined to receive the B.A. degree. In 1568 he traveled
to Zweibruecken/Pfalz and was ordained by the Rev. Cunmann Flinsbach
as a Lutheran minister, although his theological training in Basel was
of the Reformed faith. Following ordination he settled in Steinselz and
served as pastor there from 1568 to about 1590. During his incumbancy,
in 1589, the parish became Reformed in persuasion because of political
shifts at the time. It is believed that he expired in Steinselz, the village
of his birth and public ministry about 1590 or no later than 1595 because
a replacement minister was serving by 1596.
I have not undertaken to obtain the tax records to supply the first names of the missing links that here follow, but if you are interested, let me know.
Mr. Bairfalckh, son of the clergyman * c. 1570
Mr. Beyerfalck, grandson of the clergyman * c. 1605
Melchior Beyerfalck, great-grandson of the clergyman * c. 1640 - Christmas
1707 (see pedigree attached)
The given name, Melchior, was not used by the common laity in this vicinity, but was the type of name used by those descended from clergy and other forebearers educated in the classics and theology, particularly in Switzerland where this Christian name was more common.

Oberhoffen (bei Kleeburg) is 3 km. south of Weissenburg and linked with Rott parish.
I have recently uncovered more data on what appears to be your earliest direct ancestor. If you recall earlier, I discovered that you were descended of Philipp Jacob Edelmann from Steinseltz, born of David Edelmann, a citizen of Rott in 1732. I don't recall whether I submitted any forebearers of David or not? At any rate, I am accumulating quite a list of Edelmann's as I continue to probe Alsacian records.
One person appearing to be a likely ancestor is the Rev. George Edelmann, (c. 1526-1580) who was born in Weissemburg, Alsace and matriculated at Tuebingen 6 Jul 1547. He served as pastor: 1558-1562 Hofen/Alsace 1562-1569 Hunspach/Alsace 1571-1580 Battenberg & Weisenheim am Berg. Hofen and Hunspach are nearly suburbs of Steinseltz and Battenberg is just SW of Worms, Germany. Of course, the above person might only be a relative, but I did want to submit this additional information just received from: ERGAENZUNGEN ZUM PFAELZISCHEN PFARRERBUCH in the 1978 issue of BLAETTER FUER PFAELZISCHE KIRCHENGESCHICHTE UND RELIGIOESE VOLKSKUNDE, page 129, by Alfred Hans Kuby. This journal recently was placed on the shelves at Concordia Seminary, 801 De Mun Ave., Clayton. Perhaps in a few months the 1979 issue will be on the shelves with yet more information. This will be all for the moment.
