Peter Edelmann of Airlenbach/Surry NC

Compiled by William Rodney Eddleman .. weddlema@biology.semo.edu

This page was compiled by William Rodney Eddleman and gives GER, PA, and NC sources. James Groce has added some additional data from his work at the Beerfelden Church which Peter Edelman attended. Page 660 based on Weber's work, gives some narration of Peters parents. Peter was the oldest, but was only age 11 when his father died. There are notes at the bottom of this page contributed by others having info about the life of this Peter.

Baptismal Register: Beerfelden Parish (North of Eberbach in Odenwald, Germany)
Schaeffer, Hans Adam. Born 21 March 1723 in Ober-Sensbach to Hans and Anna Catharina Schaeffer. "Gone to America, 1754." There are a number of Seifferts in this register--they intermarried with Edelmans and appear with the Peter Eddleman in Rowan County, NC, and with my family in Lincoln County, NC, also. This surname often became Sifford, Seiffort, or similar spellings.

1752 Marriage Register: Beerfelden Parish.
Edelman, Johann Peter and Anna Margaretha Schäfer, of Gammelsbach and Ober-Sensbach.
Married 27 April 1752 "without previous proclamation because they intend to go to America very shortly." See Weber. [Hutzelman, Thomas H. 1990. "Immigrants to America from Beerfelden Parish, County of Erbach, Germany". National Genealogical Society Quarterly 78(3):213-220.]

Edelmann, Johann Peter and Anna Barbara Haas. Of Lautenberg and Weiten-Gesäss. "Married 11 May 1752. "Both intend to go to Pennsylvania." (who is this? Bill asks??) [Hutzelman, Thomas H. 1990. "Immigrants to America from Beerfelden Parish, County of Erbach, Germany". National Genealogical Society Quarterly 78(3):213-220.] Weiten-Gesäss is 4 km northeast of Michaelstadt. I can't find Lautenberg (is this the town Weber couldn't find?).

1753 Schafer, Johann Adam and Rosina Barbara Helm. Of Ober-Sensbach. Married 5 September 1753. "These people went in 1754 to Pennsylvania." [Hutzelman, Thomas H. 1990. "Immigrants to America from Beerfelden Parish, County of Erbach, Germany". National Genealogical Society Quarterly 78(3):213-220.]

1754 - 26 Oct. 1754--Brigantine Mary and Sarah, Thomas Aldrich, Captain, from Amsterdam, last from Portsmouth--inhabitants from Franconia, Wirtemberg, and the Palatinate. Passenger list includes Adam Schaffer, Peter Edelman, Johannes Edelmann; Joh. Georg Edelman and Hans Edelman (sick). There were other Edelmann on this brig see links here in future - Harold Eddleman probably made an error in adding this note.

1755 - Note in Sower's Newspaper--issue of 16 Oct. 1755. I have now seen the piece compiled by William Rodney Eddleman

I assume you will appreciate some feedback on your excellent effort. Some changes I would suggest:

Obersensbach should be Ober-Sensbach. These families were from Gammelsbach, Ober-Sensbach, Beerfelden, Etzean, and Hetzbach - all along or near the ancient road, the Deutsche Alpen-Ostee route. Johann Peter Edelman is well documented in "der Evangelischen Pfarrei Beerfelden im Odenwald" page 288, number 12. If someone wants to request the record, there's more certainty of getting it with a precise citation as there is more than one church register in this area. The above record, also, notes the name as Edelmann and that he was a "witwer" or widower. My correspondence with EV. Pfarramt West indicates "Peter's" father was Lorentz Edelmann (January 21, 1693-March 7, 1732)

The second Johann Peter Edelmann, who married Anna Barbara Haas May 11, 1752, is mentioned in the above register on page 288, number 14, and his father was Valentin Edelman.

I have written a letter asking for clarification on this entry.

I have not seen The National Genealogical Society Quarterly 78(3): 213-220 by Hutzelman but I hope to find it. The "County of Erbach" is probably the Kreis. I ask your patience in all of this because I have a concern that we have lost so much with the "Anglicization" of names and the culture. I sent you a date and place for search of Peter Edelmann you mention as "1762 Peter born".

Some other Surry County citations which may be of interest are:

"Inv. of Est. of Thomas Howell decd returned by Elsa Howell and David Howell, exrs. Mentioned are John Reavis, James Rutledge, Peter Edelman, John Colvard, Robert Walker, with amt L131:7:2. Wit: H. Speer, George Houser, Wm Meredith. Rec. Aug. Ct. 1786. See 2:3,21." Source: Surry County, North Carolina WILLS 1771-1827, Jo White Linn, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1992.

"Will of George Renegar, 4 Feb 1794 contains a reference of Peter Eddleman "on Turner's Creek". Source: as above.

More later. Jim

Louise published her Eddleman information in a county history. I have copies of it somewhere. It is alot clearer in print. Louise Eddleman of Springfield KY is wife of Robert L Eddleman, descendant of Peter Edelmann of Airlenbach. --Harold Eddleman.

Harold:

I believe I've written you before on my line, but I hadn't looked in detail at the info on your homepage. I refer especially to "The Peter Eddleman Room". I suspect that my line comes thru him. In your info you mention that Peter and his wife Margret came from Germany in 1762, and settled in NC with their 5 sons. Let me tell you how far back our line goes:

Charles Martin (my dad) <= Isaac Ferdinand Martin <= Christopher Columbus Martin <=Wiley Blunt Martin (b 17 Dec 1825 TN, d 15 Aug 1915, Logan Co AR) married to Mary Ann Carnett(b 6 Oct 1828 KY, d 10 Sep 1903 Logan Co AR)

Mary Ann's parents were William Carnett (d 5 Aug 1837 Benton Co. AR), and Mary Eddleman (b. NC 1800, d. 1893 Scott Co. AR). William and Mary were married in Wilkes Co. NC on 16 July/20 Aug 1816. According to the 1850 census of McDonald Co., MO, Mary was living with her stepmother. Margaret, who was 77 at the time. So her birthdate was around 1773. Thru documents that we have received from Carnett decendents, we know that Margaret was her husband's second wife. We do not have Margaret's husband's name. But we surmise that he was possibly born around the time she was (1773). Could one of Peter & Margret's son's be her husband's father? Rueben was probably born a year after Peter & Margret married (1752). So if he was born in 1753, then he could have been 20. Even Jacob could have been, since he probably was born within two years after Rueben (which would make him 18 in 1773). William and Mary Carnett named one of their sons John Eddleman Carnett, so could he have been named after Reuben and Jacob's younger brother? We would have thought that would have made John Eddleman a likely candidate to be the father, but he probably would have been too young. You mention that Peter Eddleman's family settled in Surry Co., NC. Wilkes Co. is neighboring Surry Co. These are some ideas that my mom and I have developed, and we need someone to help us go in the proper direction, if possible! Pretty soon now I'm going to detail this out on my webpage, and when I do I'll let you know, if you'd like to link to it. Does any of this sound familiar? Just to get Mary's father & mother's names would help. Thanks for your help.

Subject: Barrier/Berier/Berger/Barger family knew Peter of Airlenbach in PA and NC

Hi Harold

My name is Stephanie Harrison and I am researching my Barrier/Berier/Berger/Barger ancestors. I have a couple of tidbits on the Eddleman name in Rowan NC which I thought I would pass on.

1) In "Carolina Circle" by Ramsey on page 89 "George Henrich Birrer (Berger) landed at Philadelphia..possible that George Henrich Birrer (Berger) and Michel Behringer (Beirger) actually had the same surname. Birrer acquired a land grant in 1761. Behringer bought a portion from Birrer the following year. In 1769 Michel and Katherine "Barager" leased acres to Peter "Eddleman" of Northampton County PA. Lease was proved by George Henry Barager, Esquire.

>From the Rowan Court Mins, 11, 209 "George Berrier" was in Conestoga Creek, Lancaster Cty in 1737.

2) Will of George H Berger dated Feb 3, 1819. (Can be found on Rowan Cty usgenweb archives website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/rowanc.htm). Will signed in the presence of Robert Morgan, Abrasam Siffart and Peter Eldleman.

Michel (Michael) Berger WAS the father of George H Berger. They are on record in Wurttemburg, Germany. George H Berger married Catherine Caspar March 25, 1785..Rowan Cty Historical Commission, dated Dec 1, 1941. (I believe this to be a 2nd marriage) Michel's other son, Abraham spent a brief time in Burke Cty,then Spartenburg SC, then Pulaski and Wayne Cty Ky and eventually AL where he died. Abraham married a Eliz Massey.

I also noted the name "Sauer" on your website. My gggg grandmother was Susanna Sauers b 1760 d 1825, daughter of Phillip and Christena ? Sauers. Also, the Barriers/Berriers have quite a few Conrads in our line.

I suspect that there was a marriage between Berger and Eddleman but I haven't turned up anything so far.

Your website is wonderful... I hope this little bit might be of some help.

Best regards Stephanie

PS Unfortunately, I am unable to give you the source but I picked this info up off a PA website I believe...Jacob Hileman b 1786 m Catherine Eddleman 1810 Cabarrus Cty NC Children: Jacob Jr, John, Sophia, Adam, Nelson, Nancy, Thomas and Eliz...resided in Cabarrus until at least 1850.

Note to Stephanie Harrison and EDL

First, thank you, Stephanie, for posting the will of George Henry Berger on the Rowan County GenWeb site. I was aware that this will existed but had not had the opportunity read it yet so really did appreciate finding it in this way.

My Eddleman connection to George Henry Berger comes through his daughter Christina, mentioned in the will as deceased and with the surname Leopard. It is believed that Christina had a daughter, Catherine Leopard (Lippard), who married Adam Eddleman on 8 May 1815 in Rowan County, NC. Adam was the son of Peter Eddleman Jr. and Elizabeth Cruse. Peter Eddleman Sr. came to Rowan County from Northampton County, PA so would be the Peter who leased land from Michel Berger (Barager).

Another report on Berger & variations from Stephanie Harrison

Hi Harold

The following comes from NC Tax List 1757-1800 by Jo Linn White(a prof genealogist)

1)Rowan County 1768 Tax List: "Michel Barager, sons John and Phillip". Rowan " " " " : " Ebram Barager (Abraham)" Rowan " " " " : "GH Berger tax list of John Brandon George Henry Berger,Henry Sasifer & Jacob Crider 3" (I believe John, Phillip, Abraham and George H to be sons of Micheal)

I have picked up (I believe from the Gendex database) a John Barrier b 1744 d 1824 Meckelenburg/Cabarrus Cty NC m Anna Bushart. Children: John b 23 Oct 1770 d 9 Dec 1840 m Barbara Peck,Jacob b 13 Sept 1774 d?,Barbara b 1776,Samuel b 5 May 1782 d 25Mar 1845 (I have not been able to confirm that this John was the son of Micheal).

2) Again from Jo Linn White: "Johann Nicolaus Schubing (b. 10 Jan. 1739, d. 1807 Rowan) was in Rowan prior to 1771; his wife was Catherine Holtzhauser, dau. of Casparus Holtshauser and wife Margaretha. The baptism of their first son Johann Jacob Shuping at Great Swamp Reformed Congregation, Lower Milford Township, is recorded in Pennsylvania German Church Records of Births,Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, Etc. Known children: Jacob (b. 14 May 1767, d. 29 Jun 1857, m. Ann Casper), Nicholas (b. 1774, d. 1847, m.Elis. Kaspar 28 Jan. 1798 (Storch Diary)), Andrew (b. 27 Mar 1776, d. 8 Nov. 1845, m. 17 May 1797 Katherine Casper, both bur. Mt. Zion), Maria Elizabeth (b. c1777, d. 9 Aug. 1834, m. 24 Oct. 1797 John Jacob Beaver),Michael (b. 1781, m. 5 June 1803 Elizabeth Hartman), Elizabeth (b. 1782,m. Issac Cummins, son of Michael and Margaret Cummins), Margaret (m.JOHN BARGER, son of Col. George Henry Barger). See J. Ross Shuping, The Shuping Genealogy Collection (1993)". (Please note the will for George H Barger/Berger does not list a John as an heir)

There is also a John Burrier family from Maryland who went to Lexington Ky. Please see: http://www.www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/7398/bostian.htm and http://www.starbase21.com/Kybio/jessamine/burrier.j.txt

My gggg grandparents George Barrier and Susanna Sauers Barrier did have a John Charles b abt 1783....was thought to have died shortly after the 1790 census. Probable since he was not named in Susannah's will dated 1825.

That's about all I have on "John's" who might have slipped away to Ky, I'm afraid. I am in possession of a book written in 1941 by my grandmother's uncle, Rev Franklin Barrier...Biography of Henry Barrier. I'm finding that most of it is family lore so am in the process of trying to confirm things from the book. Unfortunately, I'm not finding Sauer/Sower researchers so I can't help much with the Sauer line yet.

Bye Stephanie Harrison

The history of Peter Edelmann,Jr. son of Johann Peter Edelmann and Margaretha Schaefer, has been published several times. He is the brother of my Barbara Edelmann Gross. I mentioned this material to EDL in November. If you or any other subscriber of EDL would like to have the information, send me a e-mail message with your name and address. Jim
