This page gives the German ancestors of Peter Eddleman of Surry County, North Carolina and others. John and Ute Edelmann made the English translations (in blue) for this page. The black text is Dr. Weber's report in German.

Weber uses (A.) to identify the clan that began in Airlenbach and (R.) to denote the clan that began in Rothenberg. The Evangelical (protestant) Church in Beerfelden served all, or most, of the villages mentioned in this document. Weber got most of his information from the records of this church.

A.27.2.1700 = identifies an event as occurring in Airlenbach on 1700 Feb 27.

(F.) IVa Adam E. = Adam Edelmann, first person of the 4th generation of the Finkenbach clan.

Page 11 .... Weber had a diagram here of these lineages; Harold will insert it later if HTML permits.

The first part of the family line is based on information out of the Graeflichen Erbach'sschen Archives. The sources only exist in individual copies that the teacher Friedrich Höreth of Mümling-Grunbach made years ago. The State Archive of Darmstadt, where the originals were held, was a victim of the Great Fire of Darmstadt, (September 11-12, 1944).

From the end of the 17th Century, the Evangelische (Lutheran) Church books for Beerfelden, Rothenberg, and Güttersbach were available. However, the records, especially the initial sections, were incomplete. As a result of this, the lineage has gaps, and, sometimes, mistakes in the connections between different family lines.

The classification of Johann Peter Edelman (R.1) VII as the son of Hans Barthel Edelmann - (F.) VIb is very questionable, though this may be the only connection that could be made at the time.

Betr. Lorez Edelmann - (A.) VII - For the individual Lorez Edelmann - (A.) VII
Der vater ist entweder (A.) VIc oder (A.) VId - The father is either (A.) VIc or (A.) VId

Betr. Joh. Nicklas E. - (F.) VIe - For the indivdual Johann Nicklas Edelmann

The marriage record of 1713 has the note that Johann Nicklaus Edelmann relocated to Rohrbach (near Sinsheim - Heidelberg) in the Pfalz. Further research should take place there.

There is an entry in the Church register of Beerfelden dated May 11, 1752 for the marriage record of Johann Peter Edelmann and Barbara, born Haas. The father of Johann Peter Edelmann, is pig herder, Valentin Edelmann, from Laudenberg - the city name is not clearly written; it is most likely Lauerbach which is near Erbach. The church marriage record has the note that the couple intended to emigrate to Pennsylvania. However, the name Johann Peter Edelmann was not found in the ship registers of 1752.

Everything above this line is the work of Weber and translators. Below this line are comments by other researchers to clarify Webers work, point out errors, or add lineages to Weber's work.

Hube - James Groce (jgroce@bunt.com) has added the following note to clarify the meaning of Eberts-Hube.
"I did some checking with my wife and son-in-law, who has a background in surveying and engineering: Eberts, they believe, is simply a person's name. Hans Bahlow Deutsches Namen Lexicon, pgs 250-251, refers to hube and huber as a measurement of sixty "morgen". A morgen is 2,500-5000 square meters and varies in some geographical jurisdictions. So, one explanation is that Veltin Edelmann was the owner of a large tract of land.

Anna Margaretha Schäfer notes from James Groce jgrpce@bunt.com
I last visited Beerfelden in October 1995; looked around, identified the area churches, made a few phone calls. I have a 16Sep96 letter from Evangelisches Kirchengemeinde Beerfelden/Odenwald (Pfarrer S. Arras) which states the following:
Johann Peter Edelmann, b. 7Sep1727, Gammelsbach married Anna Margaretha Schäfer 27Apr1752 at Beerfelden.
Anna Margaretha Schäfer was born 18Oct1729 at Ober Sensbach.
Johann Peter Edelmann is shown as a "witwer" or widower in the "Auszug aus dem Trauregister". Earlier, he married Anna Barbara Haas, but that date is not clear to me. Notice that Weber wrote Hanss Peter Edelmann first married Catharina Joh. who died 10 months after marriage. There much disagreement between Weber' report and that of Pfarrer Arras.
Johann Peter's father is shown as Lorenz Edelmann, born 21Jan1693; died 7Mar1732(locations need clarification). His wife was a Anna Eva ______; born abt 1693; died 21Dec1735,"alt 42 jhr". Died age 42.

Anna Margaretha Schaefer's parents and paternal grandparents are identified as follows: father, Johannes Schaefer b. 13Nov1693, Ober Sensbach; died 22Sep1745; mother Anna Catharina Seip, b. 2Sep1695, Ober Sensbach; died 11Feb1771; this couple married 29May1721.
Paternal GF Adam Schaefer, b. abt 1658 Ober Sensbach; died 18June1703; paternal GM Margaretha Kayser, b. abt 1661, Kailbach, died 11July1729; this couple married 24Jan1683. I will FAX or snailmail these documents to anyone who asks.

Tomorrow or Thursday, I will list the children of Barbara Edelmann Gross taken from the Moravian Archives (Edelmanns are often shown as baptismal sponsors). They were Lutheran and Reformed, not Moravian. Also, I will list other Edelmann family names and provide citations.

As a matter of possible interest, I recently received a copy of German Links:Horst's Hints For German Research by Horst A. Reschke(hreschke@juno.com). He talks about the "quintessential" German publication GENEALOGIE and some of its articles including village books and seems willing to give English translations.

This is the Temporary End of some fine information by James Groce. More is coming
