William H. Eddleman's Research
on German Edelmann Lineages

William H. Eddleman of Dorchester, Masschuetts, made a great effort to understand the lineages of American Eddleman families. He also hoped to trace the families back into Europe. After a few years of effort using American resources, he went to Germany in March 1957, learned what he could, and hired Dr. F. Weber, Osannstrasse 51, Darmstadt, Germany, to search German civil and church records. Dr. Weber was president of ______, a professional organization which published a genealogy journal.

I may give some details of the two year effort here later.

On 1959 Dec 1, Dr. Weber began the final report which contained 37 pages including the cover and some internal section covers. I planned to type the entire document exactly as Dr. Weber wrote it. However, since web pages can be any length, I plan to spell out some abbreviations which are not familiar to American readers and other minor modification may make the pages more understandable. Dr. Weber wrote the entire report in German so that technical accuracy would be greater. I will begin by installing the original German text, and then add English translation in blue.

The Appendix has 3 parts: I. Germans that emigrated to North America, II. Remarks on that list, III Maps. The maps are gone but I will have maps of the German areas as soon as possible. That will enable you to see the location of all the villages. Occasionally Dr. Weber used Edelman, but it is clear these were typing errors because he used Edelmann elsewhere for the same person(s).

Vorwort (Foreword)

Dr. Weber's List of Edelmann Emigrants to America

"Edelmann - Vorkommen" in Amerik. Schiffslisten, 1730- 1754 (Auswanderer)
" Edelman - ********* " in American Ship Lists, 1730 to 1754 (emigrants)

Dr Weber, a German genealogist, was hired in 1957 by William H. Eddleman, Dorchester, Mass., to search most of Germany for Eddleman who may have come to America. This is one page from a hundred pages he typed for WHE. The black type is Verbatim from Dr. Weber. Blue is my translation of the German text. I will add my german translation as I am able; I welcome your translations. These are the only Germans that he found that came to America. The Roman numeral is the number of that person in the family lineages which Dr. Weber compiled. I will make that number a LINK so you can jump to that lineage. It will take months to complete all this.

[A.] = Airlenbach, [G.] = Gammelsbach, [R.] = Rothenberg. Airlenbach is 7 miles north of Rothenberg and Gammelsbach is about halfway between them, but a mile east on a bigger creek. See Tour for village locations. A map will be available by the end of 1997.

Actually, [ .] refers to the branch of the Edelmann Clans in Dr. Webers documents. Thus, [R] and [R1] are different branches of the Clans and they do not necessarily live in Rothenberg.

Caution: These linkages are Dr. Webers best effort. There may be errors. My main interest is group b, but Dr. Weber did not find any of these Edelmann in Europe. To see my efforts with this group see David Eddleman and Philip Jakob Edelmann.
