The goal of this page is to list every European Edelmann who left his native land to live in another country, especially before the time of the American Civil War (1865). Please send your data.
During the late 1950s, William H. Eddleman of Dorchester, Massachuetts, made a great effort to trace Edelmann families in Europe to America. He began with published shiplists, American church records, and books published by American-German societies in the the 1930s. That approach enabled him to postulate that the David Eddleman family of North Carolina (1765) came from Steinseltz, Alsace, which is 20 miles west of Karlsruhe, Germany.

Pennsylvania German Pioneers. Vol 1, Published 1934 by Pennsylvania German Society. A list of the passengers imported in the Brigantine, Richard and Elizabeth, Captain Christopher Clymer, 1773 Sep 28. Partial list of passengers:
in part Philip Jacob Edelman Age 25 Mattes Bouser age 63
David Edelman " 49 Matthes Bowser " 22
Anna Maria Edelman " 54 Anna Elizabeth Bowser " 20
Margaretha Edelman " 26 Esther Bowser " 49
Baltazar Edelman " 4
These ages suggest David may be the father of
Philip Jacob, but these could all be siblings or cousins. What you think?
How can we determine? There have been instances where pastor notes have
resolved such questions. Does anyone have access to any church records
related to these families?
Records of First Reformed Church of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Births:
1737 John David Edelman s. of Jacob; b. Dec 1, 1730; bapt. May 15, 1737
1739 Anna Margret, dau. of Matthew Bauser and Anna Elizabeth Edelman
baptised May 12, 1739
1739 David son of Mathew Bauser and Anna Eliz. Edelman, bapt. May12,1739
His efforts to find extant records in Europe to prove the above linkage apparently were unsuccessful. See eg907 for a workshop on this effort.

Dr Weber, a German genealogist, was hired in 1957 by William H. Eddleman, Dorchester, Mass., to search most of Germany for Eddleman who may have come to America. This is one page from a hundred pages he typed for WHE. The black type is Verbatim from Dr. Weber. Blue is my translation of the German text. I will add my german translation as I am able; I welcome your translations. These are the only Germans that he found that came to America. The Roman numeral is the number of that person in the family lineages which Dr. Weber compiled. I will make that number a LINK so you can jump to that lineage. It will take months to complete all this.
[A.] = Airlenbach, [G.] = Gammelsbach, [R.] = Rothenberg. Airlenbach is 7 miles north of Rothenberg and Gammelsbach is about halfway between them, but a mile east on a bigger creek. See Tour for village locations. A map will be available by the end of 1997.
Actually, [ .] refers to the branch of the Edelmann Clans in Dr. Webers documents. Thus, [R] and [R1] are different branches of the Clans and they do not necessarily live in Rothenberg.
Caution: These linkages are Dr. Webers best effort. There may be errors. My main interest is group b, but Dr. Weber did not find any of these Edelmann in Europe. To see my efforts with this group see David Eddleman and Philip Jakob Edelmann.

Notice all the boys are named Johann and all the girls are named Anna in some families - Such holy first names honor saints and do not always appear in civil records, but they are used in church books. The middle and last names are the names you mainly look for. I am writing a page on this subject.
