No map yet, currently this page is just collecting data for a map.

This page is just getting underway. It will give some information about the Edelmann, Eddleman familes of North Carolina and eventually a map showing where they lived.

Where the Eddleman Lived in North Carolina

This is a letter composed by Susan Gall 1998 Feb 18 to commission Mr. Starbuck to search the archives of the Moravian Church for information about the Edelmann of North Carolina 1760 to 1800. All interested Edelmann revised the letter so it covered all the Edelmann of that period that they knew about.

Dear Mr. Starbuck,

I and several of my Eddleman cousins have joined together in funding a research project through the Moravian Archives to have an archivist search the church records of all those Moravian church communities in the areas that could have served the Edelmann families listed below. There seem to be 3 main locations of the Eddlemans (also spelled Edelmann):

Peter Edelmann of Airlenbach/SurryNC

Deep Creek area/Huntsville/Turner's Creek and Duncan's Creek adjoining Matthais Steelman in Surry/now Yadkin Co. between 1760 - 1800 - this would be for Johann (or Hans) Peter Eddleman and his wife Margaretha Schaeffer and their daughter Barbara Eddleman who married Theobald (Dewalt, Deval) Groce/Gross, Evlian (or Lillian) Eddleman Roberts, Christen Eddleman Randolph, and sons Peter, Jacob, and John Eddleman.

Peter Edelmann of Erbach/RowanNC

Second Creek area in Rowan Co. (still Rowan Co.) area of Salisbury and China Grove between 1769 and 1800 - this would be for Peter Eddleman and his sons Peter and John. Peter Eddleman, son of Peter was married first to Catherine Ihrig ((Oehrle, Early, Eary, Arey and second to Elizabeth Kruss (Cruse) and this Peter helped found Organ Lutheran Church in 1794. There was also present in this area a Boston/Sebastian Eddleman, of unknown parentage. Sebastian served in the Revolution and as a guard at the Salisbury Jail.

David and Catherine Edelmann of Abbotts Creek

The origin of this couple has not been proven.

Abbotts Creek, Rowan Co. present day Davidson Co and Rowan CO. between 1760- 1800 - for David & Catherine Edelmann and their son John. There may have been other children as we have seen information from the Moravian Diaries of July 31, 1776 that say a "Mr. Edelman came from Holston's River, to take his wife and CHILDREN thither from Abbotts Creek". They appeared to have been godparents for Sauer and Conrad family children in the records of Pilgrim Church in Lexington NC on Feb. 4, 1765. There is an additional Bethania Diary Vol. 3 entry for July 30, 1776 saying "an Edelman arrived from New River saying.......600 indians".

If it is possible to make an educated guess as to when David & Catherine Edelmann of Abbott's Creek arrived in the area we would appreciate your doing so. Other things you may deduce from your search for us, if you will, are whether other families emigrated with the Eddlemans, and the area they may have emigrated from. Any historical context for the Eddleman entries that can be garnered from the research would be most helpful.

We understand that while none of the Eddlemans were Moravian, often neighbors of church members are mentioned in the records of events in the life of the church and often non-member baptisms and marriages took place at the churches. Any mention of any Eddleman would be much appreciated. We enclose a check for $105 for the 7 hours of this initial search. Jim Groce has requested that you use his portion of this money first if the search does not take the full 7 hours. If instead this full payment does not cover the cost for a complete search it may be possible for us to fund more later.

We thank you for your time and your assistance.
