TSB for charcoal emissions canister (Thanks to Gadget for printing
this out and sending it to me !)
There was a continual
"farting" sound from around the area of the battery and evaporative canister
at
the front left fender area. There is a
Toyota TSB #EG002-97 "EVAP CHARCOAL CANISTER
NOISE" that calls for a small $7 expansion plenum to be sticky-backed
to the canister and connected
into the tubing. The farting immediately went away !

No-Swirlmark Buffing (Kudos to Corey Tando for the idea!)
With a black vehicle, and living in a
hard water area, it was almost impossible to wash and rinse
completely without water spots. Waxing by
hand tended to aggravate the problem and created swirl
marks. I purchased
a Porter-Cable 7336 random orbital
buffer/sander at Lowe's for $89. This is the
same unit marketed by Meguiar's for their professional
products at more than $225.
I bought the velcro backing plate and
foam buffing pad kit from Meguiar's
website for
$39. Now the polish and wax goes on
smoothly, and it is nearly impossible to create
burn and swirl marks. The old swirls and spots are gone, and it
takes 1/3 the time!
TSB for excessive A-pillar wind noise (Thanks to
Gadget and Leo F for faxing this to me)
TSB # BO019-97 I'd like
to do this one, but can't afford it, since I'm long out of warranty...
Both front mirrors are replaced w/
units that protrude away from the A-pillars more. The window frame
gaskets are replaced, as well as the
entire door gasket seal. As well, the windshield trim flashing is
replaced. This is one expensive
TSB: the mirror assemblies alone are more than $450. Wind noise isn't
that important to me now that I know
the costs involved! I may occasionally prowl the junkyards (or eBay)
to see if I can pick up 99 or
newer mirrors.
TSB for rear ride harshness (Another thanks to
Gadget and NateC.)
TSB # SU002-98 The rear of 3rd
gen's are prone to bottoming severely with any kind of load. I had
performed a test w/ chalk on my rear
bumpstops, and found I was bottoming numerous times even
unloaded doing normal errands on city
streets! Toyota had sent out a questionaire (which I received)
in response to a class-action lawsuit
(which I was part of) about driving habits and ride quality. Apparently
there were 3500 respondents who were
seemingly chosen at random to receive letters entitling them to
this TSB, regardless of
warranty. I believe I met all qualifications for eligibility, but I'm
still DENIED!
I may do this out-of-pocket as Gadget
has done. I believe parts are about $150 or so, that consists of
new replacement frame bumpstops, a
new conical bumpstop w/in the spring, and coil spring replacement
if deemed necessary
